You can also fly to Geneva or Milan (two hours 30 minutes

Or if you prefer there is a snowtrain, which takes only 4½

between 9 and 11 hours from Calais and is motorway all the way except for the
last 30 minutes.
Montgenevre/Monts de la Lune is known as the snowiest part of
the Franco-Italian Milky Way (Via Lattea/Voie Lactee) region, with its great
snow record and largely north-facing slopes. The Milky Way boasts over 400 kms
of piste (145 ski runs) of which 120 kms have artificial snowmaking facilities
(well over 1000 snow cannons). A large proportion of Montgenevre is covered by snow
canons, giving it guaranteed snow all season. With 93 ski lifts, skiers of all
standards have a vast choice of varied and picturesque routes, ideal for both
boarders and skiers. With the ability to shift over 100,000 skiers per hour,
queues are a rarity, especially mid-week when you can have entire pistes to
yourselves. There is also a brand new snow park for boarders with quarterpipe,
projump, gap and rope tow.
For car drivers, it is an ideal location from which to
explore the rest of the Milky Way and some excellent French ski resorts within
15/30 minutes drive e.g. Serre Chevalier, Puy-St-Vincent and Briancon.
Montgenevre was the first official ski resort in France,
hosting the first international ski competition in 1907 and a very popular
destination with the Paris Jet Set in the 1930’s. Today, it is know as one of
the jewels of the Milky Way, one of the largest ski areas in Europe and host to
the 2006 Winter Olympics.
Popular with English tourists for many years, Montgenevre has
excellent English-speaking ski and snowboard schools as well as a variety of
high-standard ski/board hire shops. Lift pass prices are lower than in many comparable
resorts, children 6 years and under get a free lift pass, and children from 7 to
11 years, or adults over 60 years old receive a discount of around 15%. You must
produce a document to prove your age. The standard ski pass covers Montgenevre
and Monts de la Lune, a 6-day or longer pass allows you
to ski in Alpe d’Huez, Puy-St-Vincent and Serre Chevalier. Extensions are
available for the whole of the Via Lattea. Montgenevre is geared up for
children, providing excellent nursery/crèche facilities for the very young, with
a day nursery on the slopes for children from 3-5, where there is a rest room, a
rolling ski carpet, a chairlift and lots of fun and games. The ski school
provides lessons for children over 5.
Apres Ski
Other facilities include a cinema, a natural ice rink and
toboggan run, as well as paragliding, horse riding and heli skiing (landing in
Italy). Montgenevre is also popular with Nordic skiers (cross-country skiing)
with two fantastic circuits: one leaving from the resort, a trail of 25 kms,
leading into Claviere through the undulating curves of the Montgenevre golf
course. The other leaves from Les Alberts and provides 75kms of cross-country
through the beauty spot of Val Claree. Snowshoe hiking is also a popular sport
here. So there is plenty to do for the non-down-hill skiers in the party.
At night Montgenevre offers a warm welcome in a selection of
bars and restaurants and night club, where you can taste traditional French
cuisine, Italian pasta or pizza, drink a glass of vin brule (hot wine) or boogie
the night way to the latest music. Or if you have not had enough skiing
you can take part in a torchlight descent.
